Gold filled jewelry is made with a base metal (i.e. brass) that has had a solid gold overlay applied by heat and pressure. Because some gold-filled jewelry can resemble the beauty of 14K gold in color and lustre it is an economical bridge to precious metal jewelry.   To truly be considered gold-filled, the gold layer must equal at least 1/20th the weight of the total piece weight. Most commonly you will find the hallmark, 1/20 12K GF, but gold filled jewelry also can be found stamped 10K GF and 14K GF. The overlay of gold can last up to 30 years before it eventually wears through. The overlay in gold filled jewelry is 50 - 100,000 times thicker than gold plated items and 17-25.000 times thicker than heavy gold electroplated jewelry.
